NOTE

The names from India   तज  Taj, त्वच्  Tvak are generally applied to "Laurus cassia". The authority name being absent it is only possible to guess which Laurus cassia is referred to. The Monier-Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary is the only non-taxonomic reference we found mentionning " Laurus cassia L."  for the Sanskrit names "chadana, pattra, tamāla patra, tamālaka, tvakpatrakka, utkaṭa ".  On the other hand taxonomic databases disagree on the synonymy of  Laurus cassia L. Some place it under Cinnamomum aromaticum Nees, others under  Cinnamomum verum J. Presl. The Mansfeld Databse gives a clue in one of its synonymy "Laurus cassia Burm.f., non L. =  Cinnamomum verum J. Presl" . That would indicate that Laurus cassia L. is not a synonym of Cinnamomum verum J. Presl but of  Cinnamomum aromaticum Nees, as are Laurus cassia Ait. and Laurus cassia C.G.Nees. To complicate the matter further Mansfeld points out that Laurus cinnamomum Andr. is Cinnamomum aromaticum Nees whilst we know that Laurus cinnamomum L. is  Cinnamomum verum J. Presl. No wonder that the poor linguists are completely lost.
