The confusion between
Malpighia emarginata DC. & Malpighia glabra L. has been and still is very widespread. The former is considered by many authors as a cultivated form with larger fruits whilst the later is considered as a wild form with smaller fruits. The common names and often the scientific names do not reflect this. We have selected a number of names which can be used to distinguish the wild Malpighia. No doubt a number of the above names used for the cultivated Malpighia are not specific enough. Some authors have even considered the two species synonyms, but perhaps the names of the authorities have been neglected or badly recorded or badly reported.
