Note

Cultivar groups are rather vague. We based ours on Taiwanese cultivars. Dutch and German horticulturists have come up with other group names. (Fuzzy Gourd Group), (Wax Gourd Group), (Ridged Winter Melon Group), and (Unridged Winter Melon Group). According to our present understanding the first 2 would correspond to all the cultivars within Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn. var. chiehqua How and Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn. respectively. This would leave "Ridged" and "Unridged" to include or exclude what exactly ? We believe that Latin or latinised names should be included in Group names rather than English names. Latin can then be translated back into any language where or when relevant but the standard applying to wild plants would be maintained for international exchanges of cultivated crops.
