NOTES

It is far from clear whether the generally accepted synonymy (for example as stated in GRIN or the Global Compendium of Weeds) is taking into consideration all bio diversity in a purely  "biological sense" or whether the taxonomy is based purely on genetic science. If the later is true, it would appear that some physical characteristics cannot yet be shown by the current analysis. On the other hand the "trade" is not labelling well enough  the millions of cultivars available in the world (ex. Oryza '
Vialone nano'). One apparent anomaly for example is that glutinous rice is invariably dumped with ordinary rice in the western world but in China the glutinous type  is clearly distinguished from the non glutinous kind, this is understandable given the importance of rice in Chinese cuisine. Moreover Oryza nivara which is labelled as a wild rice in the Chinese language is also dumped with glutinous and non-gutinous rices which are clearly cultivated, not wild. Perhaps its true synonym is Oryza sativa f. spontanea. That would make more sense.

Among many articles disputing even the most basic facts, regarding the well known "Basmati" rice, for argument sake, we can quote Wang, Yu & Cheng  < http://www.gramene.org/newsletters/rice_genetics/rgn4/v4p68.html >. It is worth noting that the cultivar types  "Hsien" & "Keng" which were worked out 2000 years ago by Chinese scholars have been re-confirmed in the mid-eighties by contemporary scholars. What is the verdict by  taxonomists in the western world in 2000's ?  While the debates rage our idea of creating a cultivar group called "Aromatica" for cultivars such  as "Basmati"  may not be so crazy after all.

We have listed a few typical cultivar on these pages. For hundreds of other examples we recommend a look at  <
http://www.fao.org/WAICENT/FAOINFO/AGRICULT/AGP/AGPC/doc/riceinfo/plantvar/intro.htm >. These lists are 10 to 20 years old but back then there were still many cultivars named with meaningful words as opposed to today's numbers only suited to the economically rationalised world market but totally devoid of literal meaning.
