There are a number of species within the genus Stevia (over 150). Only one is generally recognized as the genuine article : Stevia rebaudiana. Given its potential as a money spinner and as a serious alternative to "sweeteners" a number of legal barriers have been placed in its path. For example in the USA it is not allowed as a drug (medicinal herb) nor is it permitted on the market as a sweetener. Only the label "food additive" is permissible. On the other hand patented cultivars will inevitably appear on the market in the near future. Some fair dinkum such as 'Blackbird' in Canada, Ramonskaya in Russia, Suweon in Korea, some perhaps less kocha such as 'Bertoli' (apparently a corruption of the authority name associated with the botanical name).
