Notes

For additional background on the above botanical names two sets of sources can be accessed. The printed literature (see our ref.) and the on-line references. We have selected some that we regard as the most relevant because their authors have made the efforts to; on one hand sort botanical synonyms, and on the other hand, match sets of botanical synonyms with at least one or several common names (see our selected list). These in turn will direct the browsers to other references that they regard as appropriate and suitable to their specific focus.

According to A. Diederichsen (2001), in updated online Mansfeld Database, all cultivar groups of leaf mustards (B. juncea) belong to the subsp. integrifolia and Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. subsp. rugosa (Roxb.) Prain is a synonym.

All tuberous-rooted forms (megarrhiza & napiformis) belong to Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. subsp. napiformis (Paill. & Bois) Gladis

In view of this most recent reference we can conclude, based on our current general understanding (2004) that all leafy B. juncea are Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. subsp. integrifolia (H. West) Thell. However we think that most group names should be retain and perhaps "subsp. integrifolia" could be dropped simply for the sake of shortening the names as it is inevitably done in the trade, but the full name is to be used in literature, in order to avoid any doubt and confusion. Similarly Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. subsp. napiformis (Paill. & Bois) Gladis is the choice for any tuberous-rooted B. juncea. No need for group name in this case for despite the continual arguments about megarrhiza & napiformis, no one cares to demonstrate that they are different and the weight of evidence is in favour of synonymy. Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. subsp. tatsai Mao is the intermediate type with a sollen stem rather than a tuberous root.

Within subsp. integrifolia a number of types have been observed in the field such as plain-leaved, curly-leaved, heading, multi-stemmed. Some of those have full botanical names from the past and all ought to retain at least one (or several) Group name(s). For example the curly-leaved cultivars can be described as "Crispifolia" or "Chirimenna" (Japanese romanisation of a less accurate name meaning roughly "curly" as applied to Perilla), or "Fimbriata" (a familiar term in cabbage / kale terminology). The multi-stemmed mostly exploited in Japan have sometimes been described as var. japonica so the Japonica Group could describe one or several of them as a synonym.
