KOREAN : Hae ba ra gi.

NORWEGIAN : Solsikke, Solvendel.

POLISH : Slonecznik roczny, Slonecznik zwyczajny.

Types :   Large-grey-seeded (edible seeds),  Small-black-seeded (oil-bearing).

There is a totally different plant called  Guizotia abyssinica (L. f.) Cass. that produces an oily seed which is sometimes wrongly called "black sunflower seed".

Helianthus annuus L. subsp. annuus

SYNONYM(S) : Helianthus annuus L. subsp. annuus var. annuus, Helianthus giganteus L. , Helianthus macrocarpus DC., Helianthus annuus L. var. macrocarpus (DC.) Cockerell, Helianthus annuus L. var. oleifer Thell

ENGLISH : Giant sunflower.

FRENCH : Grand soleil, Tournesol géant.

ITALIAN : Elianto dei fioro grandi.

POLISH : Slonecznik olbrzymi.

SWEDISH : Jättesolros.


This should be the preferred botanical name for the cultivated seed-producing sunflower but the trade tends to omit the subsp. name.  Of course most names applied to the species apply to this subspecies,  but the above names should be restricted to the varieties with truely giant flowers.

ITALIAN : Elianto selvatico, Girasole selvatico.


Helianthus strumosus L.

SYNONYM(S) :  Helianthus macrophyllus Willd., Helianthus mollis Willd., Helianthus montanus E.Watson, Helianthus saxicola Small, Helianthus strumosus L. var. macrophyllus Britt., Helianthus strumosus L. var. mollis hort.

DUTCH :  Engelsche zonnebloem, Zonnewortel.

ENGLISH : Pale-leaved sunflower, Pale-leaved woodland sunflower, Perennial sunflower, Rough-leaved sunflower, Woodland sunflower.

FRENCH :   Hélianti.

GERMAN :   Topinambur 'Völkenroder Spindel'.

ITALIAN : Elianto perenne.

JAPANESE : Inu kiku imo.

POLISH : Slonecznik miekkowlosy.
