INTRODUCTION

Paradoxically sorting names within the genus Musa has been a greater challenge because the documentation is available in greater details than for most genera covered so far, thanks mostly to Prof. N.W. Simmonds who has covered much linguistic ground in his books on bananas. Unfortunately, despite the current knowledge in genetics, a lot more work remains to be done, due to much residual ignorance. The taxonomy in particular is crying out for attention. Further search for vernacular names and their classification could then be attempted with greater success. Until then it would mostly be a "pointless" effort according to N.W. Simmonds (an all too familiar feeling in this line of work). In the meantime it is recommended by authorities to conserve cultivar names, inappropriate as they may sometime be, because they are familiar to field workers, and adopt the grouping system in nomenclature as illustrated below (ie groups of the type (AAB Group), not the cultigroups which may lead to extreme confusion). There is some debate as to whether names of the type : Musa (AAB Group) 'Cultivar' are satisfactory and as informative as they should be. Some authors prefer to add some Latin names between Musa & the group name in order to add to the informative nature of the name. Others are totally against the idea and are of the opinion that anyone reading A or B in a group name ought to know that they refer to acuminata & balbisiana. My problem with this approach is that it sets a precedent and encourage the very inappropriate practice of only quoting the generic name and the cultivar name for any cultivated plant. For example Prunus 'Light-Pink'. Given that group names based on ploidy only exist in relation to bananas, ignoring any grouping and any specific epithet is too tempting to be resisted to. The result are meaningless "names". One may as well use numbers ... and indeed this is also a sad trend.

Most confusing names

Banane de Cuba (Martinique) = Musa acuminata x balbisiana Colla (AAA Group) cv. 'Red Dacca'

Banana de Cuba (Portuguese) = Musa acuminata x balbisiana Colla (AAB Group) cv. 'Silk'

Lacatan (West Indies, Jamaica, Latin America) = 'Masak Hijau' (Indonesia, Malaysia) (AAA Group)

Lacatan (Philippines) = 'Lacatan' (AA Group)

Lady's Finger (Hawaii) = Lady's Finger (West Indies) = 'Ney Poovan' (India) (AB Group)

Lady's Finger (Hawaii) = 'Sucrier' (USA) (AA Group) <- main "Lady's Finger", most widely distributed in the world

Lady's Finger (Australia) = 'Silk' (USA) (AAB Group) very likely misapplied, should read 'Pome'.

Lady's Finger (Australia) = 'Pome' (USA) (AAB Group)

Lady's Finger (Fiji) = Lady's Finger (Egypt) = 'Mysore' (USA) (AAB Group)

Platano (Spanish - Spain, Canary Islands, most of Latin America) = Banana (most other languages).

Platano (Spanish - Mexico, Cuba) = Banana (Europe, North America)

Platano (Spanish - Mexico, Cuba) = Plantain (Europe, North America)

Red Jamaica (British Guiana / Guyana) = 'Celat' (AAB Group)

Red Jamaican / Cuban Red = 'Red Dacca' (AAA Group) This needs checking

Saba (not from Philippines or Indonesia) = 'Saba' (ABB Group)

Saba (Philippines, Indonesia) = 'Saba' (BBB Group) = 'Asian Saba' (BBB Group) ?

Both botanical names below have been applied "correctly" and wrongly, by a multitude of authors, to many sorts of bananas, at various times over the last few decades. According to some authorities, and with the blessing of N.W. Simmonds, paradisiaca should have been applied to French Plantain and sapientum to Silk Fig representing types or groups and / or cultivars (or more correctly clones). Both fall into the AAB group.

Musa x paradisiaca L. = Musa acuminata x balbisiana Colla (AAB Group) cv. 'French Plantain'

Musa x sapientum L. = Musa acuminata x balbisiana Colla (AAB Group) cv. 'Silk Fig'

RESOURCES

A simple introduction to cultivated bananas. On Marco Bleeker's Site < http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/2011/Musa.html>

FAO provides a World List of Seed Sources and Plant Genetic Resources via a searching tool. An example can be generated by typing the words "banana" and "Thailand" in the two relevant windows of the form provided. The only drawback is that very few of the seed companies or organisations mentioned have a www presence or if they do they are are simply not linked.

Plantamerica Database, PLANT-LINK. A URL searching tool spanning 8 of the best known general search engines, such as Alta Vista, for plant related web sites. You initiate one search - you get 8 sets of results in the same amount of time it would take for 1.
