Considered by some as a synonym of Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.subsp. pinnatiloba (K.Koch) Menitsky

Notes

There are 600 + reported species of Quercus in the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens - Kew - UK lists 4564 records (taxa), including some hybrids. The majority of these are synonyms but one thing is clear from looking at such a listing: there are many binomials that are homonyms. This is where linguistic problems stem from because many authors never include authority names in the botanical names that they handle. Before commencing to tackle common names and especially hybrid names it is necessary to sort the synonymy among species. That should considerably reduce the numbers. Vernacular names can then be matched to the valid preferred names (accompanied by their respective synonyms).  This is what we have attempted to do so far, and this is why we have excluded most hybrids. We are limiting our compiling of the botanical synonyms to those which help in the comprehension of common names. Others, often very confusing to the linguists, can be found in the World Checklist Project (WCP) on Quercus and  Jean Louis Helardo's Oaks of the world. These 2 references, as well as Piers Trehane's The Oak Names Checklist, will supply many hybrid names and cultivar names.

With at least 95% of the work, we expected to do, actually done, we can make the following comments.
We have deliberately left out many botanical synonyms that we felt did not bring much to the understanding of the common names (our focus). We feel it is not appropriate to flood a compiling of common names with only botanical names - for example Quercus pubescens subsp. pubescens on its own is listed as having 278 synonyms. We have tried to point out the traps set by botanical homonyms such as all the Q. bambusifolia, Q. humilis and such like which inevitably lead to confusion in the identification of the plant concerned. In most languages we have left out many common names which are in fact generic names, not specific enough, even though they may be used in some countries, either to describe the plant or its wood in a trading context. Good examples are the Spanish terms "Encino" or "Roble". At a slightly higher level we have also omitted names such as "White oak" or "Red oak" etc. in many situations except of course when these names are relevant as in the case of Quercus alba and Quercus rubra. Other such names have survived the cull due to a lack of editing time. We leave the reader some latitude in censorship. Finally we encourage readers to send us some feedback. We will appreciate if any spelling error, missing common names, or even missing records is pointed out to us, for we have far from covered the whole world of oaks.

Note on FAO Agrovoc.

Navigation within this site is never simple. This linked page should display a list of Quercus species.
1. Click on blue cross on left hand side of a specific name.
2. Select "all languages" in little window on top of the page in order to return generic names in all available languages.
3. Go down the page to see specific terms in various languages available.
The Agrovoc reference has been used in 2009 for mostly Arabic, Hindi, Persian, and to a smaller extent Chinese and Japanese names. In the future other translations will become available on that site. These names on the whole are not exactly vernacular (common names) but translations / transcriptions of the corresponding botanical names or of names in other languages. Often they are used because there is no common name in those respective languages for the species involved. Therefore they are not likely to be so helpful in web searches but can be valuable in communications in those respective languages. In some case 2 or 3 such names are listed corresponding to the preferred botanical name, the common name in another language and the botanical synonym(s) of that taxon. A good example is Quercus rubra. The formation of such names is relatively common but much criticised. It is an accepted practice within the Japanese language which includes a specific script (katakana) for that very purpose.  It is done to some extent in most languages, especially when one is attempting to attribute a common name to every species within a given genus. Strictly speaking these are not vernacular or common names but given names.

Examples relating to Japanese:
ホワイト オーク =  Howaito (white) ooku (oak)
クエルクス コッキフェラ   Kuerukusu kokkifera = Quercus coccifera.
The above script (katakana) is used for both technical and scientific names.
On the other hand  クロガシ  Kuro gashi, the technical form of  "black oak", is in turn expressed in true Japanese script (kanji) as 黒樫.  In Japan these kanji characters are sometimes "translated" or transcribed in yet another Japanese script called hiragana くろがし for added comprehension. These 4 characters correspond exactly to the technical katakana characters. All 3 versions sound the same in Japanese. The last 2 will be found in Japanese catalogues and literature, the first version will be found in any technical or scientific text.
