NOTES

Taxonomically speaking there is still some confusion in the synonymy of Perilla. We have adopted the USDA GRIN Database preferred name for the
"Ruffle-leaved green perilla" but unfortunately they do not recognize the purple type. We have therefore adapted the name to the purple form.

We currently (2009) recognize the following distinct types. Plain green leaf, Plain red leaf, Frilly-leaved green (shiso), Frilly-leaved red (red shiso). There is a type with green leaves that are purple on the back (들깨엽  Deul kkae yeop). There is a Korean type which can be differentiated from the Japanese types. There is the oil rich perilla and finally there are now some extraordinarily variegated ornamental types. We will be calling soon to the international community for some cooperation on a special page to iron out the differences of opinion.

A modern linguist would regard most of the common names as misapplied given that Perilla is a unique plant. Looking at the synonyms of the past one discovers that Perilla has been called a basil (Ocimum), a culinary coleus (Coleus), a melisse (Melissa), a mint (Mentha), a persil / parsley (Petroselinum), a wild sesame (Sesamum) etc. It is understandable that the common names in most languages have matched the botanical binomials of the past or vice-versa. Rather than italicise all these names we have bolded those that appear most correct to us. This will also become clearer when the above mentioned page will have materialised
