Notes

1. On Thymus x citriodorus

The hybrid status of the best known "lemon thyme"  is strongly contested by Mrs Margaret Easter, a nursery woman holding the National Plant Collection (UK) of Thymus since the beginning of 1995, therefore with some considerable practical experience in the identification of various species and cultivars of thyme. She successfully (in my view) argues that the old name Thymus citriodorus (1811) should be conserved but does not give an authority name for the binomial. We assume it is Thymus citriodorus (Pers.) Schreb. Is it ?  to complicate the matter IPNI still listing the old name have droped the (Pers.) and cite T. serpyllum as a synonym. For the time being we will conserve the hybrid name since most taxonomist agree on it ... until they get persuaded to change it.

2. On  Thymus serpyllum

Many authors believe that the name Thymus pulegioides L. would be more suitable to describe what is generally called Thymus serpyllum. Margaret Easter's list of synonyms support this to some extant but unfortunately she drops the epithet (a common practice in the nursery trade) in many cultivar names. Perhaps one cannot make sweeping statements like this when it comes to cultivars very popular plants widely distributed worldwide.

In conclusion we can say that as for most globally well known and much grown plants the taxonomy is far from sorted out. We can only attempt to unravel the taxonomic and vernacular mysteries. I hope we have given the task a fair go in the above records... and this is after all a work still in progress.  Comments are most welcome.
