We do not propose to solve all the problems associated with bamboo names because they fall almost outside the kind of plants we set out to work with in 1995, and more importantly; can they ever be all solved ?. However, because some bamboos are extraordinarily beautiful, extremely useful, and some can even be eaten in parts, in 1997 we decided to create two sister files (plus a few extras) in response to a growing demand. One file listed bamboos which have an edible part, and one covered the most outstanding whilst not too rare ornamentals. People are welcome to suggest species not yet covered but falling in either of these two groups if we have omitted outstanding cultivars, and we will do our best to meet those requests. Meanwhile the list of references and resources below will go a long way towards meeting any possible demand, be it for plant material, information, seeds, photographs or ... names... and there again suggestions are welcome. In 2001 the decision to cover as many species of bamboos as possible was taken see below. We hoped that by 2002 a subtantial number of species, varieties, and cultivars would be entered in the database and on display. We can confidently predict that despite more than 12 months of distraction concentrating on other genera, by the end of 2003 we will have achieved as much as could be expected under the present under-funded circumstances. What will have been achieved from our perspective is a very good complement to the work of Prof. Ohrnberger. Whilst he has covered as thoughroughly as could possibly be expected the taxonomy of most bamboos of the world, cross-referencing with vernacular / common names of the world remained very necessary, especially indexes of valid common names in various languages because to many people they are the first step into the wonderful world of bamboos. Furthermore we believe that on one hand working seriously on common names will allow lexicographers to recommend selections of usable (if not reliable) names that common people can relate to. On the other hand there is no doubt that many of the "reliable" latinised epithets and cultivar names used in botany can be challenged by linguistically aware taxonomists. We are providing the tools with this online facility to whomever wishes to tackle these problems.
Readers surprised by the number of genera mentioned below should check the longest list of cross-matched species compiled by Wim Masman and published on line by the European Bamboo Society. His work together with R. & H. Stover's amazing Bamboo Index were two of our most useful initial references while attempting to regroup botanical synonyms on one hand, and on the other hand common names in any given language. A large number of either botanical or vernacular names are rarely mentioned in common references. The longest list of genera we have come across on line is found in the "pop-up menu" of the form provided by the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan on Endangered / Rare Bamboos and Rattans, as part of their Information Services. The ultimate lists of course are in D. Ohrnberger's 1999 publication "The Bamboos of the World". Genera, species, forms, cultivar names, even some common names and their meaning can be found in this monumental work. We have followed as closely as practicable the classifications of D. Ohrnberger throughout this entire bamboo section. The justification for this choice is that this is the latest publication on the subject and the most complete. Throughout this collection of plant names I constantly complain that taxonomists neglect not only common names but also infraspecific taxa, making the task of matching synonyms extremely difficult. D. Ohrnberger has tackled those problems admirably and I hope that specialists in other groups of plants will follow his lead. I hope that our efforts will have proven worthy of being called complementary to Prof. Ohrnberger's work.

Australian Bamboo Network (ABN), Publish many useful pages.Noted in particular "How to Prepare Bamboo Shoots for use as Vegetables", Australian sources of plant material, cultivation notes for temperate and tropical conditions etc.

Bamboe, A site compiled by Peter Meeuws. This site has an interesting feature. Any of its pages can be translated from Dutch into a number of languages with the Inter-Trans device. I highly recommend his "Woordenboek" a glossary of bamboo vocabulary which actually makes sense when it is translated by the robot. Start from the Home page < http://home.iae.nl/users/pms/bamboe.html >, click on Inter-Trans icon, fill in windows (Dutch, your language) and click on "lexicon" or equivalent.

Bamboo Australia, "Belli Bamboo Parkland" Kenilworth Road, Belli Park via Eumundi, Queensland 4562, Australia . Sell a wide range of bamboos, including seeds of some species, and run a large display plantation.

Bamboo Down Under , an Australian wholesale nursery. They serve a comprehensive photo album with nice shots of species not commonly found elsewhere. Some shots of more common species are particularly well chosen see for example how they display B. multiplex. < http://www.bamboodownunder.com.au/album/default.asp >.

Bamboo in Japan, A very interesting site, by Dr. Masatoshi WATANABE, from either the ethnobotanist, taxonomist or linguist point of view because it provides photographs, botanical names and common names in English and Japanese, as well as some background on the names such as origin, derivation, meaning etc. All notes are both in English and in Japanese (one language per page). English version : < http://www.kyoto.zaq.ne.jp/dkakd107/E02-e.html >, Japanese version : < http://www.kyoto.zaq.ne.jp/dkakd107/E02.html >.

They display a small range of photos but most are comparable in quality to those at Bamboo Garden or Tropical Bamboos. < http://www.bambooselect.com/index.htm >.

Catálogo Visual de Bambúes < http://www.bambunera.com/visual/ > A comprehensive site in English and Castellano (European Spanish). This is the Visual catalogue (a gallery with several dozen of photographs - 124 when we visited) extremely well organised in 9 galleries of thumbnails correctly labelled botanically. Each picture being linked to a larger photo. The disappointing downside is that the large photos are not of a quality matching the Bamboo Garden images for example. It is a pity because the publishers have taken the care of placing their copyright labels in non-obtrusive spots unlike other website publishers.

Earthcare's list of links. Creatively presented and well designed list of well chosen sites.

Endangered Species < http://www.endangeredspecies.com/B/Names/names.htm > The greatest index of bamboo names in several languages, including Latin, on the Web. Great pity that the authority names are not attached to their respective botanical names. A few photos, many more in the pipeline.

European Bamboo Society (EBS). This is in fact an informal federation of national European bamboo societies. They have compiled a comprehensive resource list covering the world and classified by subject (all related to bamboos of course), including W. Masman's gigantic file of botanical synonyms. They are linked to all the European Societies within the federation.

If one can get hold of some of the 100+ small publications, each published separately, forming part of this on-going work, many questions will be answered. Especially good to sort Chinese, Japanese and botanical names (including Chinese & Japanese scripts). Single folios can be purchased from Verlag D. Ohrnberger, Wiesenstr. 5, 8901 Langweid a.
